Radiol Bras. 2016 Mai/Jun;49(3):199–204 201 http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/0100-3984.2015.0151 Constrictive pericarditis is characterized by thick pericardial fibrosis and frequent calcification that progressively impairs diastolic filling of the heart, with associated symptoms of heart failure. Annular constrictive pericarditis is extremely rare, and few similar cases have been reported. Previous pericardiectomy, congenital heart disease, and complications of tuberculosis may be the leading causes of this condition. Depending on the location of the pericardial constriction, the clinical presentation of localized constriction may differ, including obstruction of the right ventricular outflow tract, coronary obstruction, and pulmonary stenosis. The imaging evaluation of cardiovascular calcifications has been the subject of a series of recent publications in the Brazilian radiology literature. Multislice computed tomography may be an important tool for the precise identification of annular constrictive pericarditis.

Reoperation Rate and Indication for Reoperation after Free Functional Muscle Transfers in Traumatic Brachial Plexus Injury

plexus injury. Few studies report the rate of revision surgeries following free functional muscle transfers. We examinedthe reoperation rate and indication for reoperation after primary reconstruction of upper extremity function with a freegracilis transfer after brachial plexus injury. Methods: From 2003-2016, we identified 25 patients who underwent a free functional gracilis ...

Intraplexal nerve transfers

Intraplexal nerve transfer is defined as nerve transfer of a nerve within the brachial plexus with intact spinal cord connections to a more important injured nerve. For elbow flexion, the most popular one for the upper arm brachial plexus injury is the “Oberlin” nerve transfer. Transferring a part of the ulnar nerve to the branch to the biceps (Oberlin 1) and possibly transferring a part of the...

The Role of MRI in the Diagnosis of Post-sternotomy Injuries of the Brachial Plexus

Brachial Plexus Injury (BPI) is an uncommon complication of median sternotomy capable of causing a permanent or transitory sensitivity and/or motor function impairment in the upper limbs. During a cardiac surgery through sternotomy, for the assessment of the thoracic cage configuration and the site of mediastinal structures, a broader surgical field may be required. If the sternal retractors ar...

Double free gracilis muscle transfer after complete brachial plexus injury: First Canadian experience.

Traumatic brachial plexus root avulsions are devastating injuries, and are complex and challenging to reconstruct. Double free muscle transfer using the gracilis muscles is a potentially effective method of restoring upper extremity function. The authors report on the first two patients treated using this technique in Canada. Both sustained traumatic brachial plexus root avulsion injuries resul...
